Education & Outreach

California Human Development (CHD)  ·  Serving 31 Northern California Counties

CHD’s Education & Outreach team brings free, culturally responsive, and bilingual education directly to the communities we serve — at worksites, community events, health fairs, schools, and more.

Funded through partnerships with state and community-based grant programs, our certified bilingual specialists provide workers, families, and community members with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe, informed, and empowered. Below are the grants awarded to CHD that make this work possible.

Grants Awarded to CHD

California Department of Industrial Relations

California Workplace Outreach Project (CWOP)

CHD was awarded a $250,000 CWOP Statewide Activator Plus grant by the California Department of Industrial Relations. Through this grant, CHD’s certified bilingual outreach specialists educate workers across Northern California about their workplace rights and labor law protections — meeting workers at the fields, labor camps, community centers, and local events.

CWOP outreach covers wage and hour rights, workers’ compensation, workplace safety, and how to file a complaint with the California Labor Commissioner — empowering farmworkers and low-income workers to advocate for themselves on the job.

Pesticide Safety Training — En Español

CHD was awarded a grant by the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment to provide free pesticide safety education to agricultural workers and their families — entirely in Spanish, delivered by CHD’s own certified bilingual pesticide trainers.

Farmworkers are among the most at-risk populations for pesticide exposure. Our trainings cover safe handling and application, personal protective equipment (PPE), reading pesticide labels, understanding re-entry intervals, and how to recognize and report pesticide-related illness. Training is offered at agricultural worksites, labor camps, and community events throughout Northern California.

Grant Awarded to CHD  ·  Cal OES LISTOS California Grant Program

LISTOS California — Community Resilience & Emergency Preparedness

CHD was awarded the LISTOS California Grant through the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to help our most vulnerable and underserved community members build resilience and prepare for disasters before they happen.

LISTOS (meaning “ready” in Spanish) focuses on the communities that face the greatest barriers to disaster preparedness — including farmworkers, seniors, immigrants, and people with limited English proficiency. CHD’s bilingual outreach team delivers hands-on, culturally tailored training on emergency kits, evacuation planning, wildfire preparedness, and how to connect with local emergency resources.
